Window Safety

Here at Wilson Aluminium Engineering, we constantly advise our clients to ensure their windows are safe and secure to prevent accidents happening to themselves or the people around them.

We do gate repairs, door repairs and window repair services. Window noises, window leaks, creaky doors and loose hinges are just a few problems covered by us.

Below are some examples of the safety maintenance we provide.

Casement Windows (Retrofitting)
Changing of aluminium rivets to Stainless steel rivets to ensure the casement window panel does not get detached from friction stays due to weakened aluminium rivets. Check that your rivets, screws and friction stays are not broken, loose or rusty. You can use a mirror to check the stainless steel screws/rivets (There should be a minimum of three) on the top and underside of the window panel.

Friction Stay Stainless steel grade 304 or equivalent

Minimum thickness not less than 2.5 mm

Length not less than 1/2 width of window leaf
Window Leaf Maximum width not exceeding 700 mm
Screw Connection Minimum thickness 2.65 mm
Connection of Friction Stay (Window Frame) Stainless steel grade 304 self-tapping screw of minimum size no. 8 (4 mm)

If aluminium section < than 3mm thick, epoxy coated screws can be used

Minimum 4 screws on each side of friction stay
Corner Brackets (if used) Zinc casting corner brackets
Sliding Window
Sliding window safety features available includes angle bar, safety stopper and rail guide to prevent sliding window from jumping track which is the main cause of falling sliding windows. They can also be installed on windows facing corridors to deter burglary attempts. Check the windows to ensure that the safety stoppers/angle strips are in place, and the windows slide proper on tracks.

Safety Devices To install the following:

1. Polyethylene sliding window self-locking safety device (2 nos. per panel)

2. Synthetic resin stoppers at top of window outer frame – minimum 2 nos. per panel width and repeat the same along the track – The stopper shall be fastened with stainless steel grade 304 or equivalent rivet/screw of minimum 4 mm diameter

3. Aluminium bottom outer frame with fixed angle facing outside

* Dimension “b” shall be minimum 1.5 times dimension “a” [refer to drawing]
Sliding Panel Maximum width not exceeding 1.2 m
Timber Louver Windows

Check the windows to ensure that the timber frame is in good condition; tightened and not damaged in any way. Use a mirror to check blind spots. Glass panes should be replaced when cracked or are loose in any way.

Adjustable Aluminium Louver Windows

These windows however secure, need to be constantly checked that the frames are not loose and glass panes can be easily removed. Check the windows to ensure that lever lock is never loose and works as intended, and that the glass panes and frames themselves are not damaged.
